Even if you鈥檙e not set on a specific major or minor, it鈥檚 still a good idea to take a look at these options. Trying a new subject that sounds interesting to you can help make your decision easier later on.

We will create a schedule that keeps you on track based on the major you put in your survey. If you would like to request any specific course for your major or minor, you'll have the opportunity to list it in your survey.

CHEMISTRY

Chemistry majors have the option of pursuing a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree, both of which require two semesters of mathematics:

  • BS majors must take Calculus I (Math 131) and Calculus II (Math 132). Students are recommended to take Foundations of Calculus (Math 130) or Calculus I in their first semester.
  • BA majors may choose from several mathematics options. In addition to Foundations of Calculus (Math 130) or Calculus (Math 131), students may also begin with Introductory Statistics (Math 115) in their first semester.

Choose one of the below courses. Csci 125 is an introduction to object-oriented programming using the Java programming language. ChromeBooks do not support the software used in this Csci 125. No prior experience is required for Csci 115 or 125, however, Csci 125 moves at a slightly faster pace. If you are comfortable with the faster pace, sign up for 125; otherwise, we recommend 115 first.

***Most students will start with Math 131, or a higher-level calculus if you have AP, IB or transfer credit. Students in this major choose one of three concentrations: biology, chemistry or geology. Undecided students should follow recommendations for whichever interests them most between the biology and geology concentrations, as these simultaneously explore the chemistry concentration. LANGUAGES

If you plan to major in a language, you will complete the Global Language Anchor Plan requirement automatically.

Hope currently offers majors in Chinese Studies, Classical Studies, French, German, Japanese Studies and Spanish. If you would like to learn more about our languages and programs, please visit the Department of World Languages & Cultures website.

You should have received an email to your Hope account with your language placement. The majority of first-year students are placed into our first four semesters of language instruction, at the 100- and 200-levels. More information about the placement process can be found on the DWLC placement page.

Language Credit

If you begin your language studies at Hope by completing a course at or above the second-semester level, you will receive additional credits equivalent to the lower-level courses you skipped, up to 12 credits. For example, if you take and pass Fren 201, you will receive additional credit for Fren 102 and 101. If you take Span 250 or 251, you will receive additional credit for Span 121 and 122.

RECOMMENDED COURSES FOR PRE-MEDICINE, VETERINARY MEDICINE, DENTISTRY, OPTOMETRY, PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT, PHARMACY, PODIATRY AND GENETIC COUNSELING

If you wish to apply to one of these health professions programs for entry directly after Hope, you are best to take both general biology and general chemistry in your first year. However, some students find the rigor of multiple natural science courses to be challenging in their first year of college. Additionally, some students find it beneficial to take a gap year between their bachelor's degree and professional school. It is recommended that you consider your comfort and ability to handle the rigor and make the best choice for you and your success. We recommend taking one natural science course if your ACT Math score was below a 26 or your SAT math score was below a 1230. Please contact the Health Professions Advisors with any questions you have about your natural science courses in the fall semester.
